Animal Clothing Wins Surfer Poll
As the UK surfing season begins to take off myself and group of surf-mad pals headed off down to Newquay for a weekend of surf, fun and hopefully a little sun. While relaxing in the evening we began to discuss (argue about) our favourite items of surf clothing.
Our discussion soon turned into a full blown poll of favourite brands and favourite items. One of the more organised members of our little band of slacker surfers even made some notes. She went around the bar asking two simple questions:
What is your favourite item of surfwear?
and
What is your favourite surfwear brand?
The results were not particularly surprising with two key brands coming out on top. animal clothing and roxy tied in first place as the favoured brands of surfer wear. Roxy was without doubt the most popular brand with the girls and Animal with the guys.
The items favoured by surfers were as varied as their haircuts but many said that their boardshorts were their favourite. A few people said that their backpacks were their most used items and a couple said that they couldn’t be without their flip flops.
The poll sparked quite a lively debate as people discussed the various clothing designs, the features that worked and how hard wearing the clothes are. Robustness is an aspect of surfing and surf clothing that is often overlooked.
Surfing really can put your body and your clothes to the test. Board shorts, for example, need to be strong enough to withstand being scraped over the jagged seabed without tearing. They’ve got to stay up when a surfer is tossed from their board in turbulent waters and, of course, they mustn’t fade too much in the sun.
It was for these reasons that many of the people asked chose Animal as their favoured brand of board shorts. Many told tales of wiping out and surfacing without their shorts. Animal board shorts definitely came out on top when it came to staying power.
Another factor that makes animal clothing a cut above the rest is strength. These shorts could withstand a nuclear blast they are so tough. Scraping your backside along the sea bed will not result in some embarrassing holes exactly where you don’t want them and a few people told us they were wearing the same Animal shorts that they had used during last season.
The most important attribute for many of my slacker surf chums was affordability. (Why am I the only one who appears to have a proper job? ) Living on a shoestring means that there is rarely much spare cash to spend on life’s luxuries. Surf clothes and accessories fall into the category of essentials for most surf-bums so it is important that this essential equipment will not break the bank. Animal clothing came out on top again for affordability and value for money.
So if you are new to surfing and you are looking for the right clobber myself and my surfing mates would highly recommend Animal. And if you are a girl looking for something a little more stylish and feminine, take a look at roxy. You’ll be in very good company.
